The Merrymoor Inn in Mawgan Porth Cornwall - History and About Us

Bookmark and Share

The Merrymoor Inn was built during the 1930's as a shop called Beachhaven Stores. (There is an early photograph depicting this in the front bar).

During the war it was used as W.R.A.F. quarters. In 1946, the name was changed to 'The Merrymoor' and it became a restaurant and snack bar.

In 1961, it was acquired by the Evans family who ran it as a licensed restaurant and snack bar with Bed & Breakfast accommodation in five bedrooms. The restaurant (now the bar) was open from 8.30am until 10.30pm and served breakfast, morning coffee, lunches at 6/6d for 3 courses, plain teas for 2/6d and cream teas for 3/6d with a wide range of evening grills.

A full license was obtained in 1964 and the restaurant and snack bar were turned back into two bars. At the same time an extension to the guest accommodation was added.

The business is now run by Lynne and Dudley Bennett (daughter and son-in-law of the Evans), helped by their son, Nick. Recent improvements were the forming of a beer garden out of waste land in 1987 and major refurbishments in 1989 to provide a new bar with increased family areas. At the same time all seven bedrooms were provided with private facilities, colour TV and teat trays. In 2007, we undertook a complete upgrade and refurbishment of the bar.

Despite all the changes over the years, our aim has always been the same - good food, beer and comfortable accommodation at competitive prices.

The Origins of the Name "The Merrymoor Inn"

Merrymoor Sign

The description "Moors" has referred to several historic and modern populations of Muslim (and earlier non-Muslim) people of Berber and Arab descent from North Africa, some of whom came to inhabit the Iberian Peninsula. (Source: Wikipedia)

Our sign depicts a "Merry Moor", so he is therefore pleased to stop by for a refreshing drink with us!
